Tai the Toad

So Tai the Toad is an Asian-themed slot from Hacksaw Gaming, played on a 5x5 grid with 19 paylines. Came out July 2024. I'll be honest, it feels pretty safe for Hacksaw -- they usually go proper weird with their themes, but this one's straight down the middle. Temple backdrop, big stone toad statues either side of the reels, lots of reds and golds. It looks nice enough, sounds decent too with the traditional pipes and all that.

Thing is, if you've played Magic Piggy before, you're going to get serious deja vu. It's basically a reskin -- same stats, same mechanics, just wrapped in an oriental package. Medium volatility, max win of 7,500x the bet, and an RTP of 96.3% at its highest setting. Bets go from 10p up to 100 quid. Hit frequency sits around 32.94%, so you do get wins ticking over fairly often. Not a bad session game, just don't expect anything groundbreaking.

Low pays are your standard 10 through Ace card ranks -- nothing exciting, topping out at 3x the bet for five Aces. The premiums are where it gets a bit more interesting: oranges, a green flask, a purple scroll, a blue mask, and a golden sycee. Five sycees nets you 30x your stake, which is the best regular symbol payout. Wilds land on any reel and also pay 30x for a line of five. The Toad symbol itself pays rubbish on its own -- same as the lowest cards -- but its real job is transforming into wilds or gold coins when the Prosperity Pot shows up.

The main base game mechanic is the Toad and the Pot feature. When a Prosperity Pot symbol lands alongside any toads on the reels, all the toads flip over and reveal either wilds or gold coin symbols. Gold coins carry values from 1x up to a massive 1,000x your bet, and there's a chance a coin bag appears instead, slapping a 2x to 5x multiplier onto up to five coins. That's where the bigger hits come from in the base game.

For free spins, land three FS scatters and you get the Toad Bonus with 10 spins. There are meters above each reel that fill up with Toad Points when Dragon or Double Dragon symbols land. The Prosperity Pot then drops toads into those reels based on how full the meters are. Fill all five meters at once and you bag another 10 spins. Hit four scatters and you upgrade to the Golden Toad Bonus, where the meters don't reset after each Pot activation -- that's where things can properly snowball. There are also five bonus buy options ranging from 3x to 200x your bet if you can't be bothered waiting.

Look, I had a decent enough time with Tai the Toad. It ticks along nicely, the Prosperity Pot moments give you something to look forward to, and the 7,500x max win is achievable in both the base game and the bonuses. But I couldn't shake the feeling I'd played it all before in Magic Piggy. Hacksaw Gaming normally push the boat out with mad themes and clever mechanics, and this just doesn't have that spark. If you're into traditional Asian-themed slots and you never tried Magic Piggy, you'll probably enjoy it. For the rest of us, it's fine -- solid, reliable, just a bit forgettable by Hacksaw's standards.
