About Oliver Thornton

Who I Am

I'm Oliver Thornton, the lead slots analyst here at WinGuru. I grew up in Bristol, read economics at the University of Edinburgh, and spent five years working as a quantitative analyst at a mid-size investment firm in Canary Wharf. The statistical modelling was interesting enough, but I found myself spending every lunch break reading about slot mechanics and RTP configurations instead of bond yields.

In 2022, I decided to turn that obsession into a proper career. I left the City, set up my own testing lab at home, and haven't looked back since. Three years of full-time reviewing later, I've played and analysed well over two thousand slots — and I still genuinely enjoy loading up a new release on a Monday morning.

What I Do at WinGuru

Every review on this site goes through my hands before it's published. I don't just spin a game ten times and write a paragraph — I run structured test sessions, usually several hundred rounds minimum, tracking hit rates, bonus trigger frequency, and actual volatility against the provider's stated figures. When the numbers don't match, I say so.

I also maintain our data tables, keep provider profiles current, and write the feature guides you'll find across the site. If a new mechanic appears in the market — whether that's cluster tumbles, split symbols, or some new take on expanding wilds — I break it down so you understand exactly what it does before you wager a penny.

Why I Built This

The honest answer? Because I couldn't find a UK slots site that treated players like adults. Most review sites either read like marketing brochures or bury useful data under walls of filler text. I wanted to build something where a player could check the actual maths, read a straightforward opinion, and try the game in demo mode — all in one place, without signing up for anything.
