Army of Ares -- First Impressions From the Battlefield
So I have been spinning Army of Ares from Hacksaw Gaming for a few sessions now and honestly, it looks proper menacing. Ares himself stands there looking furious next to the reels while soldiers line up ready for a scrap. The comic book art style is genuinely sharp, and the soundtrack -- bit unusual in places -- really does build tension. Bonus rounds shift the backdrop to burning cities which feels suitably dramatic. It runs on a 5-reel, 4-row grid with 14 paylines, bets from 10p up to 50 quid, and the RTP sits at 96.26% with high volatility. Max win is 15,000x.
Symbols and Payouts in Army of Ares
Low pays are your standard card royals -- 10 through A in a steel Greek style -- and five of a kind only gets you 1x your bet. The premiums are shields, axes, swords, horses, and Ares himself, paying between 4x and 10x for a full line. Ares is the big one at 10x for five. Wilds also pay 10x independently, so a full line of those is decent.
Then you have the special stuff: Wrath Scatters that trigger the expanding wild reels, FS Scatters for the bonuses, and in the bonus rounds you get Green Discs, Red Discs, epic versions of both, and Battle Horse symbols. Each does something different to the reel multipliers, which I will get into.

Bonus Features -- Where Army of Ares Gets Interesting
The Wrath Reels are the main base game feature. A Wrath symbol lands and expands into a full wild reel with a multiplier anywhere from x2 to x300. Multiple Wrath Reels on the same win? Multipliers get added together. Plus it can chuck up to 5 extra wilds onto the grid. Genuinely livens up dry stretches.
Three FS Scatters trigger Fear and Flame -- 10 free spins where those extra wilds now carry their own multipliers up to x100. Four scatters gets you Wrath and Ruin, which is a completely different beast -- 3 refilling lives, reel multipliers starting at x1 that grow through Green Discs adding value and Red Discs multiplying it. Battle Horse symbols get collected and multiply the reel totals at the end. Five scatters unlocks Ares Ascends, same mechanics but you start with a full grid of discs and a Battle Horse guaranteed. That one cannot be bought either, so it is properly rare.
Is Army of Ares Worth Your Spins?
Look, I will be straight -- if you have played other Hacksaw Gaming slots, none of the mechanics here will blow your mind. The expanding wild reels, the multiplier collecting bonuses -- it all feels borrowed from their back catalogue. But Army of Ares packages it all up with brilliant visuals, a properly moody atmosphere, and enough layers to keep sessions engaging. It is not reinventing the wheel, but the wheel still spins well enough to keep me coming back for another pint and another few rounds.
